Christopher Choo

This slim, amiable young man is a pioneer graduate from the Lasalle-SIA College of the Arts where he majored in directing. He can perform and direct both English and Chinese contemporary dramas as well as Chinese operas.

His love with chinese operas started when he was young. His idol was the late cantonese maestro Liang Chi Pak. His opportunity to see and learn from Liang came in the seventies when Liang came with his troupe to perform in Singapore and Malaya. A chance meeting between them sealed their fate as teacher and disciple. Liang was moved by his earnestness and took him in as his disciple. Since then Choo has been going to Hong Kong annually to pay respect to his teacher and to learn from him.

Unfortunately, Liang passed away in 1992, at the age of 89. In 1997, Choo staged a show entitled "Inspiration and Aspiration of Christopher Choo" which consisted of three opera exerpts to commemorate Liang's 70- year acting carreer in cantonese operas. Choo's performance was excellent in all three excerpts.

Choo is an all-round artiste; he could play the role of a 'wen-wu sheng' (scholarly or warrior-like), 'lao sheng' (elderly) or a 'chou sheng' (comical) equally well. Some of the roles he played in recent years which will long be remembered by opera fans are: the poet Soh Tung Bor ( When the Lioness roars ); the comical roles in 'The Pipa Alley' and 'Errors at Hua Tian', the emperors in 'The Patriotic Princess'.
He is a natural and talented artiste. It is a joy to watch him perform.
